Mother Sun

by Yamila Johnson

Mother Sun,

Provider of life and light

Mother Sun,

I want to thank you for you’ve given sight.

It’s quite often you’re overlooked but just know

I see you and I feel you.

Your warm rays on my skin.

The way all you ask of me

Is moisture to seep from my body.

I’d give you anything you want

As long as you light up the beach.

The clouds out of jealousy

Want to block you and what you do.

But even the clouds are unable to stop you.

You prove this theory with Sunkisses,

So delicate on my cheeks and nose.

You prove it even more

With Sunburns to those who don’t want to

Believe or know.

You prove this by peeking through

Wherever a blank space may be.

Living on an island means you get to see

More of me.

For this I am grateful because

Mother Sun, Mother Sun,

With your beautiful light,

And your ability to oversee

You’ve managed to lift me,

With your strong resilient rays,

You’ve single handedly saved me.
